Jose Quispe Avellaneda owns four hectares of land in the village of la Esperanza in Huabal district. The farm is broken up in to four separate parcels of land, which are in slightly different areas within the village, with the lowest sitting at 1700masl and the highest at 1900masl. Jose grows caturra and catimor, the former in the higher altitude plots and the latter in the lower ones, since the climatic conditions means that plants are less susceptible to coffee leaf rust at higher altitude where the temperature is cooler. In the past the whole area was planted with typica variety, but after a number of years of severe coffee leaf rust outbreaks, Jose had converted first to caturra and then more recently to catimor.
