Coffee Story

Haider Abamecha is the man behind Kebena Estate — a respected figure with over 30 years of experience in the coffee industry. After working for five years in Saudi Arabia, Haider returned to his home region of Jimma and started sourcing coffee on a small scale. Haider's operations are deeply rooted in strong ethical frameworks, organic practices (Organic and RFA certified), and community welfare. He annually invests in local infrastructure, school building, and supply distribution.

Region & Farm

Region

Limu Kossa, Jimma Zone, Ethiopia

Limu Kossa district of the Jimma Zone is situated within the expansive Oromia region in southwestern Ethiopia. Historically renowned for its fertile volcanic soil, rich biodiversity, and lush natural forests, the Limu Kossa district provides a natural canopy for shade-grown coffee. Altitudes ranging from 1,865 to 2,090 masl, combined with generous rainfall and stable temperatures, allow coffee cherries to mature slowly, creating an ideal microclimate for coffee growing.

Farm

Kebena Estate

Kebena Estate is located in Limu Kossa district and spans over an incredible 532 hectares, which is rather unique around here. Haider emphasizes environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and strict quality control. After harvesting, cherries are immediately sorted by ripeness and density. Having its own processing infrastructure allows the estate full oversight during fermentation and drying, ensuring high consistency and a refined cup profile. During the season, Kebena Estate employs thousands of seasonal workers alongside a full-time agronomist.

Processing & Flavor

The coffee undergoes a traditional washed process. Handpicked cherries are depulped to remove the outer fruit skin. The coffee is then fermented in water tanks overnight to break down the remaining mucilage. The coffee is then thoroughly washed in water channels, where lower-density beans are removed. Finally, the coffee is dried on African beds with regular turning for even drying, followed by a final hand-sorting phase.

The Taste Idea

" With this lot from Kebena Estate, I aimed to get a clean, harmonious, and vibrant espresso which easily represents Ethiopian coffees. The intense aroma reminds us of honey, florals such as linden blossom, and berries. Vibrant, well-integrated acidity reminiscent of mulberry with wild honey and dandelion syrup sweetness and good balance. The finish is clean, long, refined, and brings notes of golden berry. "

Jan Jim Huza - Head Roaster.
